I am a Marie-Curie Fellow at Bioethics Institute Ghent, Belgium. In 2015, as a PhD I participated at an ETH Zurich event , where Inés was a key speaker. We got connected on LinkedIn after the event. Last month, while working on a job application at in Academia, I approached Inés for guidance.
Although we had not been in ‚active‘ contact for almost five years, she was elaborate in her reply to my request, gave me concrete ideas and pointers on how to prepare this job application, even broke down the advertisement so that I could address all the relevant requirements and implied expectations through various documents which were part of the application dossier. She not only focused on technical aspects of job applications but also gently nudged me to reflect on and see my tendency to doubt myself in a larger perspective. She told me that I could write to her again if I have additional questions and followed up few days later. I was positively surprised by her supportive and enthusiastic reply.
I am grateful for this input she provided in this application process. I believe irrespective of the outcome of this application, her inputs will be useful in every future application I will submit. It is also good to know that I could formally approach Ines as a coach if needed. In my view, a good connection is an essential ingredient for a successful coach-coachee relationship. I feel that trust and connection with Inés and will definitely recommend her name to my other friends, particularly female friends and fellow researchers who are looking for support in their career development.
